In early April, the Daily News reported that the government wishes to fast track the plans for a soda ash factory at Lake Natron ( Given this recent attention, TNRF member, Marc Baker of Ecological Initiatives, provides an overview of Lake Natron, its diversity, Lesser Flamingos and what a soda ash factory could mean for this fragile environment. 


Ecosystem and Livelihood Adaptation Network Workshop in Dar

Last week ForumCC hosted a workshop for the new Ecosystem and Livelihood Adaptation Network (ELAN), which is an initiative spearheaded by IUCN, WWF, CARE and IIED. The objectives of this workshop were to deliver a brief training on the role of ecosystem management approaches in building human resilience, to assess readiness, interest, and needs of practitioners and policy makers in Tanzania for enhancing integration of ecosystem approaches into human adaptation practice and policy.

Tanzania’s Eastern Arc Mountains Forests World Heritage Application Status

Last week, Tanzania's application to seek World Heritage Status for the Eastern Arc Forest Mountains was revoked.  In light of recent misgivings regarding the this issue, a group of NGOs joined together to provide some clarification on the processes that have been followed and the intentions behind the nomination.


Radio Program on Wildlife Management Areas and Loliondo

On March 21-23, TNRF and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) hosted a workshop in Longido for traditional pastoralist.  At this workshop there was a strong focus on Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) and the land use conflict going on in Loliondo.  A summary of the program was aired on national radio.
