The IUCN World Conservation Congress

The IUCN World Conservation Congress

The Congress is divided into two parts: The Forum and the Members' Assembly

The Forum

The Forum is a grand public gathering hosted by the world’s conservation community, bringing together people from all over the world to discuss, share and learn.

Addressing the world’s most pressing sustainable development challenges, the Forum offers four days of debates, workshops, dialogues, art and film, roundtable discussions, training courses, music and exhibitions on the following three streams:

More than 800 events will take place during the four days of the Forum. About 10% of them are organized by the IUCN Secretariat; the rest run by IUCN members, Commissions and partners.

To help participants make sense of the content-rich agenda and to create focus groups and knowledge networks around specific topics, IUCN has created 13 Journeys through the Forum. Journeys will enable participants to navigate easily through all types of events on a specific theme or sub-theme. Global thematic workshops, sustainability dialogues, knowledge cafés, and conservation cinema will all feature in the following Journeys: Energy, Markets & Business, Environmental Law & Governance, Rights and Livelihoods, Mediterranean, Protected Areas, Islands Marine, Forest, Production Landscapes, Species, Water, Biocultural Diversity, including Indigenous Peoples.

All events aim to share knowledge, to build understanding and consensus, and to form new alliances and partnerships.

Members' Assembly

The Members’ Assembly, the main governing body of IUCN, brings together IUCN’s member organizations to debate and establish environmental policy.

More than 100 resolutions and recommendations are expected to be adopted by this unique global environmental parliament of governments and NGOs. These are the mechanisms by which member organizations guide IUCN’s policy and Programme of work as well as influencing many other organizations around the world..

Members also vote on IUCN’s programme of work for the following four years, elect the IUCN President and Council, and manage the business affairs of the Union.
