Responsibilities:As a key member of the TNRF Secretariat, you will coordinate and facilitate the development of a new Human-Wildlife Conflict Working Group, with the following reponsibilities: 1) Be familiar with the current ideas and literature on HWC, whether anecdotal or unpublished or published scientific work. 2) Visit sites in Tanzania and if opportunities allow, other African countries where HWC mitigation is taking place with different levels of success. 3) Develop strong linkages and develop and promote effective networks between researchers and management personnel or institutions studying HWC and developing mitigation techniques both nationally and internationally. 4) Develop close working relationships that serve to promote idea development and information exchange with all relevant government ministries and natural resource related agencies impacted by HWC. This must include the "new thinking" on problem animal control (PAC) that has been developed in the last 5 years (see point no 1) 5) Assist with the development of a national HWC management plan that adopts a 'vertically integrated' and strategic approach to the problem. Explore ways that such HWC mitigation plans can be integrated into current or forthcoming wildlife policy or legislation in Tanzania, but still have flexibility for future modification 6) Produce and disseminate information guidelines on effective HWC mitigation techniques at different levels of administration and community activity Qualifications:TNRF is looking for a hard working, experienced and dynamic team member who has the following qualities and skills:
  • Sound qualifications and experience in wildlife management - with a track record of working with rural communities;
  • Experience in human-wildlife management preferable
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Swahili, with a strong ability to write reports, papers and proposals
  • Excellent organizational, team member, interpersonal and time management skills;
  • A self-starter willing to take initiative, be self-evaluative and learn quickly;
Terms:A two year renewable contract with a four month probationary period, based in Arusha. TNRF provides a competitive salary and benefits based on experience, starting on TNRF's published pay scale 2 (USD 1200 - 2000 gross per month gross).
