TNRF Learning Event: Wildlife Management Areas

Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) are provided for by the Wildlife Policy and Wildlife Conservation Act of 2009 as areas of village lands set aside for purposes of wildlife conservation. They present a range of challenges, concerns and opportunities for communities in their ability to manage and benefit from natural resources, which significantly support their livelihoods.
WMA guidelines and regulations were issued in 2002, and although research has been done to understand the effectiveness of the WMAs, there remains many lessons to be learned about the process, implementation and overall success of WMAs– what works, what doesn’t and why? More specifically, do WMAs serve community interests? What are community perceptions of WMAs? Who benefits?
There will be two presentations on ongoing WMA research as well as on new initiatives in Tanzania and regionally.
The overall objectives of this learning event are as follows:
- To create a shared knowledge base about WMAs - To share information about past, current or future research on WMAs in Tanzania, which can inform key stakeholders about lessons learned, gaps in our knowledge about WMAs and ways to shape and coordinate future research so that it's useful and complements what is already known.
- To generate a dialogue about WMAs - To provide a platform where stakeholders can engage in a dialogue about WMAs generally, gain lessons learned and identify areas of interest for engagement with policy or design.
- To identify ways forward – to determine joint actions for moving forward on productive engagement with WMAs.
