Wangari Maathai 

Around the globe people are honoring and mourning the passing of Wangari Maathai, environmentalist, women and human rights activist and leader.  Maathai, who celebrated the launch of the Mama Misitu campaign here in Tanzania, dedicated her life to promoting environmental sustainability and made famous the simple act of planting trees.  Learn more about Professor Maathai’s incredible journey and send your condolences here: http://www.greenbeltmovement.org/

More than 4,000 people gathered in Dar es Salaam to attend the Gender Festival hosted by the Tanzania Gender Networking Program. It was the 10th annual festival and this year one of the main issues discussed was land.  Learn more about what was being said here.

Gender and REDD+ in Tanzania

Gender and REDD+

REDD will often have gender-differentiated impacts. Women are generally more vulnerable to adverse impacts and loss of benefits. TNRF in collaboration with the Tanzania Forest Conservation Group (TFCG) and the Tanzania Community Forest Network (MJUMITA) have published a new report and information briefing on gender and REDD in Tanzania.  The briefing and report include information and strategies to support REDD participants in understanding and realizing gender equity and women’s empowerment in Tanzania.

Cross-Border Timber Trade Monitoring

 
Introduction
 
TNRF has teamed up with the East African Wildlife Society (EAWLS) to carry out a program, “Monitoring of Wood and Wood Products Trade in Kenya and Tanzania Border Points.”  The project, funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is up and running, implementing activities geared at monitoring the traded forest goods at Kenya-Tanzania borders.
