Tanzania Natural Resource Forum convened the Fourth National Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) Forum at Gold Crest Hotel, Arusha- Tanzania on 13th December 2019. This follows other similar earlier forums the first in 2012, the second in 2013 and the third in 2016. The main objectives of these forums were to call upon and facilitate a platform for the multi-stakeholder exchange of information, sharing experiences and agreeing on a common course for the success of CBNRM in Tanzania.

This 4th CBNRM forum focused its discussion in the Wildlife Sector in Tanzania, particularly on Engaging Communities in curbing Illegal Wildlife Trade in Tanzania covering the four pathways;

  1. Equitable benefits from conservation
  2. Law enforcement through strengthening local norms against IWT
  3. Costs of living with wildlife ‘Human wildlife conflict’
  4. Alternative livelihood improvement/Income Generation Activities (IGAs)

EUROPEAN COMMISSION FIELD VISIT TO PARTICIPATORY RANGELANDS MANAGEMENT (PRM) PROJECT TO ASSESS IMPLEMENTATION PROGRESS

European Commision (EC) delegation in Kenya, together with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Tanzania Natural Resource Forum (TNRF), RECONCILE, County Government of Baringo and community representatives from Pastoral and agro pastoral communities in Irong Conservancy  carried field visit of PRM implementation in Baringo County from 13th -17th January, 2020. PRM is a cross boarder project implemented in Tanzania and Kenya. In Tanzania the project is being implemented by Tanzania Natural Resource Forum in six clusters while in Kenya the project is being implemented by RECONCILE in four subcounties of Baringo county.

The team had two visits in Baringo; first visit was in Irong conservancy to meet the community to assess level of engagement and the benefits so far PRM has for the community. From the community consultation meeting, Irong leadership was of the opinion to address water development especially the Sukta springs which provides water for livestock, wildlife and human beings during both wet and dry season. The second visit was in Koitagen Community Forest where the community is protecting the forest as a catchment area. This catchment area is believed to be very important for smooth flow of water downstream for the benefits of pastorals and agro pastoral communities in the area.

TNRF IN THE 57TH GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL FUND COUNCIL MEETING

Tanzania Natural Resource Forum (TNRF) a national Catalytic organization for Indigenous Community Conserved Areas (ICCAs) Tanzania is participating to the 57th Global Environmental Facility (GEF) council meeting which started on Monday of the 16th December 2019 and expects to end on 19th December 2019.

On day one of the meeting, the council had consultation with civil society representatives, hearing their perception towards combating illegal wildlife trade. CSOs representatives came from China, India, Nepal, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Burundi, Kenya, Namibia, Panama, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago.

Under the theme of ‘winning the “Fight against Corruption in the Land Sector: Sustainable Pathway for Africa’s Transformation”, the third Conference of Land policy in Africa was organized by African Land Policy Centre the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and the African Development Bank as the follow-up of the previous Conference in 2014 and 2017. As one of the expert organization sharing natural resource related knowledge and approaches among more than 550 delegates from various fields such as governments and traditional leaders, Tanzania Natural Resource Forum (TNRF) is a recognized national ICCA catalyst organization aiming at effectively engaging in the management and conservation of the ICCAs in Tanzania.
