Coordinator – Regional strategy for the conservation of cheetah in East Africa

A partnership between the Zoological Society of London and the Wildlife Conservation Society is looking for a suitably qualified person to coordinate the implementation of the regional strategy for the conservation of cheetah in East Africa, drawn up in 2007. This region covers the countries of Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia and Djibouti.
The successful candidate should have an honours degree, and preferably an MSc and/or PhD, in a conservation related discipline (e.g. biology, ecology, wildlife management, community based conservation). They will have a minimum of three years experience working in conservation in the region, and ideally will also have some experience in cheetah and/or wild dog conservation. He/she must be prepared to travel and work with diverse groups of people and must have good written and spoken English. The ideal candidate will be able to facilitate an extensive portfolio of diverse conservation related activities across the region, which may address issues ranging from outreach and field surveys through to policy and legislation and illegal trade. They should also be highly capable communicators and able to engage a wide network of people in the cause of cheetah conservation, with experience in proposal writing and fund raising. Responsibilities include:
- Facilitating government endorsement of existing strategies
- Coordinating and implementing aspects of the strategy that require regional collaboration
- Coordinating and assisting with fundraising
- Assisting in implementing national action plans for each country that falls within the region, including organising and facilitating workshops were necessary
- Developing capacity within the region to conserve cheetah
- Monitoring and evaluating progress towards achieving the overall objective and goal of the strategy
The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate their ability to carry out the above tasks. Preference will be given to nationals from the region. The post is for a maximum of three years, on an annual renewable contract, and will be based within an East Africa range
state for cheetah. The position will operate under the management of the lead coordinator for the range wide conservation of cheetah, based in Southern Africa.
