Abstract:
Strengthening Voices

A new publication by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), Kimmage DSC, and TNRF has just been released.  The ‘Strengthening Voices’ booklet and accompanying DVD provide an in-depth overview of how pastoralist communities and local government are shaping strategies for adaptive environmental management and poverty reduction in Tanzania’s drylands.

‘Strengthening Voices’ is an overview of the project work and findings based on the IIED and Kimmage Development Studies Centre (KDSC) project, “Strengthening Communities’ Voice in Shaping Policies for Sustainable Environmental Management and Poverty Reduction in the Drylands of Tanzania”.  The booklet and accompanying DVD mark the end of the first three-year phase of the project.

The overall goal of the project is to contribute to poverty reduction, peace and the long-term and sustainable ecological and economic development of the drylands of Tanzania.  The first three-year phase was geared at developing a policy-oriented training program targeted at two key stakeholder groups: 1) pastoral civil society groups and local government authorities; and 2) development practitioners, senior government and donor policy makers.

This booklet, and its accompanying DVD, includes details on the background of the project, its achievements and how it plans to build on its successes to effectively roll out the project in other districts in Tanzania.
