ENHANCING HOLISTIC RANGELAND MANAGEMENT THROUGH CAPACITY BUILDING OF PASTORAL COMMUNITY OF LAKE NATRON ECOSYSTEM AND ENDUIMET WMA FOR IMPROVED LIVELIHOOD IN LONGIDO DISTRICT

Longido district has a total area of 6392.35 km of which over 80% is  grazing land; it is a semi-arid with majority of the inhabitants are livestock keepers. Grazing resources has been a key challenge to livestock production systems and even wildlife for sustainable livelihoods.

To enhance the livelihood and nutrition status of livestock keeping communities in Longido district, improving the management of rangelands for optimal utilization is essential. Tanzania Natural Resource Forum (TNRF) through BMZ Climate Facility project conducted a 10 days on field training to livestock keepers within these areas in good pasture management, grazing land security, environmental conservation, livestock-wildlife interaction and setting of demo plots to equip them with necessary skills for holistic rangelands management  for increased biomass production for both livestock and wildlife. A total of 53 men and 27 women from Natron and Enduimet WMA were trained in Longido from 23rd June - 2nd July 2021. In preparation for pasture production process, preparation of the demo plots of at least 40 acres in Tinga tinga, Enduimet, Loondoluo, Orbomba and Ilchangit Sapuk village sites was done.

This training is an outcome of BMZ Climate Facility Project “Protection of key ecosystems, increased resilience, and adaptation for their sustainable use” a project implemented jointly by TNRF and WWF Tanzania (TCO) funded by Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through WWF Germany in Partnership with Engagement Global. The project started in the mid of November 2020 till the end of July 2021 covering Enduimet, Natron, Ikona, and Makao WMAs and the community management area Kisima and Karamba-Ndea in Mkomazi wildlife corridor.
