COMMUNITY VISIONING AND VALUATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES FOR SUSTAINABLE PLANNING IN KILWA AND KILOMBERO DISTRICTS

The Tanzania Natural Resource Forum (TNRF) is currently implementing Community Land Protection project which is a sister project of the National Engagement Strategy (NES) under the support from International Land Coalition (ILC). The project aims at developing capacity of community members to be able to make their own plans through community by-laws on resource management. The initial activities include Community visioning and valuation processes of natural resources. The project pilot sites are Mavuji village in Kilwa District and Chiwachiwa Village in Kilombero district. The visioning and valuation processes took place from 17th - 27th of June 2018 in both areas.

Visioning exercise help community members think about the past, the present and future existence, use, ownership and control of resources; while valuation intends to inform members on the change in value of resource access, acquisition and use. Both visioning and valuation assist communities in planning for the future and understand the benefits of seeking formal documentation of their resource rights. It also help communities understand the high value of their natural resources, as well as the replacement costs. Methodology used was participatory were all villagers were participating in mentioning the past and present natural resources.

Generally, the project intends to empower communities to know the value of their land and natural resources; And local leaders to practice good governance on land based investment and natural resource management.
