The Center on Ecotourism and Sustainable Development is a non-profit research institution whose mission is to design, monitor, evaluate, and improve ecotourism and sustainable tourism practices and principles. Its policy-oriented research focuses on ecotourism as a tool for poverty alleviation and biodiversity conservation, as well as socially and environmentally responsible tourism practices.

The program involves research teams in three regions: East Africa, West Africa and the Himalayas, which coordinate the work of a number of local NGOs and conduct experiments with them in villages that are already engaged in CBFM. We are measuring the extent to which CBFM practices increase sequestration in existing forests and reduce emissions of carbon by avoiding deforestation.

Global Footprint Network is committed to fostering a world where all people have the opportunity to live satisfying lives within the means of Earth's ecological capacity. We are dedicated to advancing the scientific rigor and practical application of the Ecological Footprint, a tool that quantifies human demand on nature, and nature's capacity to meet these demands. Conceived in 1990 by Mathis Wackernagel and William Rees at The University of British Columbia, the Ecological Footprint is now in wide use by governments, communities, and businesses to monitor current ecological resource balances and to plan for the future.

History

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) -founded in 1978- has invigorated the ancient practice of growing trees on farms, using innovative science for development to transform lives and landscapes. Our research focuses on four global themes: Land and people, Environmental services, Strengthening institutions and Trees & Markets.

IIED is an international policy research institute and non governmental body working for more sustainable and equitable global development. Although based in London we work globally through a wide range of long-standing relationships with partners across the developing world.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works at the crossroads of livestock and poverty, bringing high-quality science and capacity-building to bear on poverty reduction and sustainable development. ILRI works in Africa, Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean, with offices in East and West Africa, South and Southeast Asia, China and Central America.

ODI is Britain's leading independent think tank on international development and humanitarian issues. Our mission is to inspire and inform policy and practice which lead to the reduction of poverty, the alleviation of suffering and the achievement of sustainable livelihoods in developing countries. We do this by locking together highquality applied research, practical policy advice, and policy-focused dissemination and debate. We work with partners in the public and private sectors, in both developing and developed countries. ODI's work centres on its research and policy groups and programmes.

The Research Into Use (RIU) programme aims to improve access to knowledge and technology for poor people whose livelihoods depend on natural resources.

WIOMSA is a regional professional, non-governmental, non-profit, membership organization, registered in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The organization is dedicated to promoting the educational, scientific and technological development of all aspects of marine sciences throughout the region of Western Indian Ocean (Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, Comoros, Madagascar, Seychelles, Mauritius, Reunion(France)), with a view toward sustaining the use and conservation of its marine resources. The Association has about 1000 individual members as well as about 50 institutional members from within and outside the region.
