Recent articles and a statement from the Communications Officer of Tanzania National Parks have confirmed that the Tanzanian Government is planning to build a commercial road that cuts directly through the Serengeti. This is becoming a very hot topic, especially within the conservation community in Tanzania and even internationally, and TNRF would like to alert our members to the issue and provide information so they can learn more.

On 20th April, at a workshop held to promote information exchange regarding conflicts between people and elephants in Tanzania, NGOs and wildlife authorities met to encourage dialogue between people and organizations working to avoid further conflict. As a result of the workshop, participants, who included leading NGO practitioners in the field of human-elephant conflict as well as their counterparts in government, decided to move forward with plans to establish a discussion forum on the subject.

In March this year in Tanzania a civil society forum on climate change provided its members with a report of CoP15 - a way for grassroots organizations in Tanzania to learn about the main outcomes and strategize local action to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Over 150 participants from mostly Tanzania, including partner activists from Uganda and Kenya, convened in Dar es Salaam for a 2-day session to learn and plan a coordinated reaction.

TNRF study on biofuels published by IIED

A new publication is the most recent output of TNRF's applied research study on the biofuels sector. The book, titled Biofuels, land access and rural livelihoods in Tanzania, is the latest in a series of publications by the International Institute for Environment and Development that looks at land tenure and resource access in Africa. The study documents the experiences of communities with three types of biofuel crops -- sugarcane, jatropha and palm -- in four regions, and analyzes the benefits these communities earn from plantation and small holder crop production.

Maajabu Films is teaming up with VetAgro (TZ) and GALVmed (UK) to produce a film to promote the vaccination of East Coast Fever, a disease that hits pastoralist cattle hard in Tanzania. Studies about the vaccine show that it greatly increases the survival rate of the livestock, and in turn, improves the livelihoods of the livestock keepers.

 At the National Climate Change Hearings in Dar-es-Salaam on Wednesday 2nd December, Tanzanians from around the country testified to the affects of climate change in their daily lives. The testimonies were provided inputs for the negotiating team from Tanzania to present at the international conference on climate change in Copenhagen, Denmark this month. Hon. Dr. Batilda Burian, the Minister of State in the Vice President's Office (Environment) was the keynote speaker and lead panelist. The event was organized by ForumCC - The Tanzania Civil Society Forum on Climate Change - with the support of DfID and Oxfam.
