Field Officer

The Mpingo Conservation Project is a Tanzanian NGO developing Participatory Forest Management and Forest Certification as a combined tool to achieve forest conservation and alleviate rural poverty in south-eastern Tanzania.

Grade: Junior Executive Officer

Responsible to: National Coordinator

Location: Kilwa Masoko, Tanzania

Start Date: as soon as possible

Main Duties:

1. Assist rural villagers in managing their local forests and the revenue gained from them, and in meeting other challenges.
2. Develop and implement Participatory Forest Management in MCP operational villages.
3. Prepare Village Land Forest Reserves for forest certification.
4. Support CBO activities in designated villages.
5. Be the principle MCP liaison officer in designated villages.
6. Provide general administrative assistance to the National Coordinator as and when required.

Qualifications / Experience:

This an excellent opportunity for a young graduate in the natural resources sector to start their career in conservation and natural resources management. The successful applicant will receive extensive on the job training in all the various aspects of the role, and their responsibilities will be developed over time. Candidates should have completed either a bachelor’s degree or an advanced diploma in a relevant discipline, speak good English and Swahili, and be familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel. Enthusiasm, initiative and willingness to learn are of greater importance to this role than a long list of qualifications or previous experience. Applicants should be good communicators as they will frequently have to address village meetings.

The position is based in Kilwa Masoko, and carries with it a competitive salary plus allowances. Start date is flexible, but the sooner the better. This opening is only available to Tanzanian citizens. It is a junior role but excellent opportunities exist for internal promotion, and preference will be given to candidates likely to be suitable for later promotion.
