Tanzania Land Conservation Trust - Executive Director
BACKGROUND
The Tanzania Land Conservation Trust (TLCT) is Tanzania's first land conservation trust and represents a unique opportunity for achieving biodiversity conservation while supporting community goals. The Trust's main objective is to protect land through purchase or donation for wildlife conservation and the promotion of ecotourism, cultural tourism, and sustainable pastoral practices that benefit local communities and other stakeholders. TLCT is governed by a Board of Trustees currently comprised of representatives of the Monduli District Council, African Wildlife Foundation, Tanzania National Parks, World Wildlife Fund, community members, and private conservation interests.TLCT currently owns one property, Manyara Ranch in northern Tanzania, which has 50 staff.
SUMMARY OF POSlTION
The Executive Director will be responsible for growing TLCT to fulfill its national mission to protect priority properties. Strategic planning and design will be critical to ensuring a successful conservation program. As TLCT's first Director, a successful candidate must be a leader interested and experienced in private land protection. This includes developing and implementing short-and long-range conservation objectives, developing strategic plans, raising funds and providing leadership and management to staff. They must cultivate cooperative working partnerships with a diversity of people, groups and agencies. They must have the ability to energize people, form productive teams and prioritize resources to achieve effective conservation results. The Director will:
- Develop and implement strategic annual and long-term plans to prioritize actions and measure progress towardsquantitative objectives.
- Lead a conservation program that will identify, prioritize, acquire, and manage critical properties for conservation while providing benefits to neighboring communities.
- Identify, cultivate, secure, and create significant public and private financial resources.
- Negotiate complex and sensitive land agreements and policies.
- Lead, recruit, retain and supervise a team of diverse staff in several offices.
- Oversee the financial health of TLCT including overall responsibility for financial management, setting financial goals, analyzing results, and taking corrective actions.
- Ensure that programmatic commitments, financial standards, and legal requirements are met.
- Recruit, support and coordinate a national board of directors from business, government, non-profit organizations, and local communities responsible for oversight of TLCT.
- Utilize existing or build strong partnerships to develop strategic multi-disciplinary teams to implement priority land conservation strategies.
- Communicate needs, strategies and accomplishments with a variety of audiences in person and in writing including elected officials, communities, media, scientists, donors, and others.
- Create an atmosphere of cooperation and collaboration between various stakeholders.
OUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree, at least 6 years relevant experience in conservation, including working at a senior level.
- Commitment to and passion for wildlife conservation and land protection.
- Extensive leadership experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives, delegate responsibility and manage performance of a multi-disciplinary team of staff; foster an environment of creativity and professional growth.
- Track record of successfully securing significant public and private funding that led to recognized benefits.
- Strong knowledge of current and evolving trends in wildlife conservation, private land conservation, government relations, fundraising and non-profit management.
- Knowledge and experience with integrated livestock and wildlife management.
- Strong knowledge of land and natural resource policies and laws, and ecology. Knowledge of and experience with real estate transactions, lease and conservation easement conveyances.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting, but also make decisions independently.
- Ability to manage risks responsibly; assesses consequences of decisions prior to action.
- Strong communication and presentation skills; ability to persuasively communicate to diverse groups and individuals.
- Demonstrated negotiation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to recruit and coordinate board members from diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated experience in financial management and strategic planning.
