Mahale Mountains National Park (MMNP) forms a remote peninsula on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika and is one of Tanzania's foremost biodiversity hotspots. MMNP is renowned for its sizeable chimpanzee population as well as nine other primate species, varied habitats from tropical rainforest to afro‐montane grasslands, and a large number of endemic aquatic species in the waters of Lake Tanganyika. In order to better protect the Mahale chimpanzee population from human transmitted diseases and ensure favorable Chimpanzee viwing conditions a permit system for viewing Chimpanzees is being introduced as outlined in the General Management Plan for MMNP.

In 2007, the Mahale Ecosystem Management Project (MEMP) commissioned consultants to design a Chimpanzee Viewing Permit System for Mahale Mountains National Park (MMNP).
