The Forestry Working Group has invited Professor Wangari Maathai to launch its advocacy and awareness campaign to improve forest governance and increase community awareness of forest value. Invited guests include members of government, civil society, international development partners and the private sector.

The FWG is a collaboration of 17 civil society partners in Tanzania working on forestry issues such as governance, carbon payments, participatory forest monitoring, and biofuel.

The aim of this seminar is to disseminate findings of the research conducted in 2005 by TRAFFIC East/ Southern Africa, and open up dialogue among policy makers and actors on the formal laws and regulations governing the management of Forestry resources. The paper will be presented by Dr. George Jambiya, Policy Officer with WWF Tanzania Programme Office, and will be chaired by Dr. Furaha Lugoe of Topo-Carto Consultants Ltd.

The overall objective of the meeting is to seek and obtain opinions for the improvement of the GN196, prior to its implementation later this year. This consultation event is part of a Wildlife Division consultation initiative which is being facilitated in northern Tanzania jointly by the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) and TNRF.
