Tanzania Natural Resource Forum (TNRF) and its members express their deep sorrow following the death of Wayne Lotter, founder and chairman of PAMS Foundation. Wayne Lotter was shot and killed by unknown people on Wednesday 16th August 2017 in Dar es Salaam.

It’s widely known that for decades, Wayne dedicated his life to protecting Africa’s wildlife, supporting government initiatives on anti-poaching and worked closely with natural resources actors and partners to ensure wildlife is well protected and conserved.

He undertook tremendous work in Tanzania protecting elephant and other wildlife, establishing himself as a trusted supporter and friend to field rangers and the communities adjacent to wildlife protected areas.

SURVEY: AN ASSESSMENT OF USAID's NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PORTFOLIO IN TANZANIA

At the request of USAID Tanzania, ECODIT, (a small US company), is carrying out an assessment of USAID’s Natural Resource Management (NRM) portfolio in Tanzania. The assessment aims to;

  1. Illuminate ways in which the portfolio is making progress toward the stated purpose of improved stewardship of natural resources, and
  2. Identify the assumptions or gaps in the design and management approach

The evaluation will generate evidence for informed decision-making and learning that responds to various intended audiences with differing interests, ranging from whether the NRM portfolio is advancing the goal of Tanzania reaching middle-income status to whether activities are having the intended outcomes.

Engendering the Mainstream through Village Bylaws: A Case of Tanzania

By Godfrey Massay

Land Laws in Tanzania are among the most progressive laws on gender equality in land access and ownership in the Sub-Saharan Africa (Knight, 2010). Despite these progressive laws, women have little representation in the land allocation decisions including in the meetings of the Village Council2 and the Village Assembly3 (Pedersen and Haule 2013, Dancer and Tsikata 2015, Salcedo-La Vina and Morarji, 2016, and Kisambu, 2016). Even though Tanzania’s land and local government laws provide for minimum ratios of women’s representation, in practice women are rarely represented in an effective way.
