Sea Sense
Sea Sense is a local Tanzanian NGO which was set up in 2001 to protect the rare dugong (sea cow) and five species of marine turtle, reverse declining population trends and promote the protection of coastal and marine habitats vital to their survival.
Aims and Objectives
Working in partnership with local coastal communities, the University of Dar es Salaam and other stakeholders, the main aims of Sea Sense are to:
- Protect marine turtles, dugongs and their habitats in Tanzania through community involvement in habitat conservation, nest protection and environmental education activities;
- Collect data on the status and distribution of turtles and dugongs in Tanzania - information critical to management;
- Promote local community livelihoods through turtle and dugong-based tourism, provision of incentives and habitat protection.
